Tempi: The first freight train from Thessaloniki to Athens passes through

Passenger trains expected to resume by tomorrow afternoon—Reason for the delay explained

Newsroom December 4 08:42

Shortly after midnight on Wednesday, the first OSE freight train from Thessaloniki to Athens passed through, following a suspension on Monday due to severe weather conditions caused by Storm Bora, which created significant problems in a tunnel at Tempi.

Specifically, at 12:30 a.m., a single track was opened for freight trains. Although the goal was to resume normal operations on the Athens-Thessaloniki railway axis today, this appears not to be feasible just yet.

Work is underway to clear 50 drainage shafts connected to a major sewage system installed on a train platform over a 2-kilometer stretch, where debris and rubble have accumulated.

According to reports, by tomorrow afternoon, this single line is expected to also be available for passenger trains. However, the second track is not expected to be operational anytime soon. The 50 drainage shafts in the tunnel are clogged with debris, and specialized clearing equipment mounted on the non-operational track has been deployed to unblock them.
