Earthquakes in Attica: “We have recorded 30 below 2.8 Richter, & they may continue even for months”

"The Parnitha area cannot be affected", said Athanasios Ganas

Newsroom December 30 12:17

For the phenomenon of microearthquakes in Attica, some of which were felt in the early hours of Sunday morning, the director of research of the Geodynamic Institute, Athanasios Ganas, said, among other things, that the phenomenon “may continue for weeks or even months”.

According to him, “30 earthquakes below 2.8 Richter have been recorded in the area around Chalandri. This is not unusual. They cause concern for the residents of the basin because they are close to the epicenter.”

Ganas attributed these earthquakes to the movement of fluids in the Earth’s upper crust while assuring that “there is no chance of a major earthquake in Attica because there is no major fault in Chalandri heading towards Papagou-Zografou. There is no such big fault that causes concern. If there was such a large fault we would have mapped it. There are many small scattered with an east-northeast direction from Kato Halandri to Zografou-Papagos and when we say small we mean 1-1.5 km long.”

“The micro-earthquakes are not due to the excitation of the faults but to fluid movement in the crust”, repeated the seismologist, who was categorical: “The Parnitha area cannot be affected.”
