2025 minimum wage adjustments: Private and public sector increases to begin at the end of January

The new minimum wage will apply from 1/4/2025

Newsroom January 13 03:31

The minimum wage for 2025 is expected to begin at the end of January, which has variations from previous years based on the new Adequate Minimum Wage Act that was recently triggered.

The new minimum wage will be effective 1/4/2025. Economists’ approaches “photograph” an increase of 40 euros to bring the minimum wage to 870 euros from 830 euros today.

Specifically for the public sector, in 2025, an increase of 20 euros will be paid from April to new civil servants so that the salary will be equalized with the minimum wage in the private sector and an equal increase will start in 2026.

We recall that the new minimum wage based on a mathematical formula will be implemented from 2028 while in 2025, 2026, and 2027 the determination of the minimum wage will follow the schedule that is currently in force, with the difference that in addition to the scientific committee, a consultation committee will be established with an enhanced role in which the social partners and economic bodies (e.g. ELSTAT, CBE) will participate. The committee aims to start the process of determining the basic salaries, with the new model, even if it will be implemented three years later.

The Minister of Labour and Social Security, Niki Kerameos has already sent out the invitation letters, inviting all stakeholders to nominate the members, who will form the two committees that will participate in the consultation on determining the minimum wage for 2025.

Specifically, a Consultation Committee is to be established, which will be composed of five representatives of workers’ organisations, five representatives of employers’ organisations, and the President of the Mediation and Arbitration Organisation (O.M.E.D.).

It is worth noting that, until recently, each social partner submitted a separate proposal for setting the minimum wage. However, for the first time, all social partners are being brought together in a single body, the Consultation Committee, to reach a common conclusion.

Similarly, a five-member Scientific Committee is established, with the participation of independent experts on economic issues, including labour economics, nominated by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, the Ministry of National Economy and Finance, and the Hellenic Statistical Authority (Hellenic Statistical Authority), as well as the President of the Council of Economic Experts (C.E.E.).

As stated in a relevant announcement, the two Committees will submit their submissions, so that they can be taken into account for the amount of the minimum wage increase for the year 2025.
