Slovakia: Opposition prepares motion of impeachment against Fico

His pro-Russian stance and the dispute with the Ukrainians over the gas issue are currently putting Fico in an awkward position within the walls

Newsroom January 14 07:15

Robert Fico, Slovakia’s prime minister, is expected to have a pretty tough 2025 as the opposition is poised to file a motion of impeachment against him.

Fico’s post-trip to Moscow, the 15-day holiday in Vietnam, the aggressive social media posts against Volodymyr Zelensky, and Ukraine deciding at the end of the contract to permanently cut off Russian gas transit through its territory, Yesterday, it initially made a 180-degree turn, asking in a recorded and written message from Volodymyr Zelensky for the major energy issue facing Slovakia to be resolved, and today it seems that it will come under fire from the opposition within the walls.

According to Slovak media reports, the Slovak Prime Minister is expected to face a motion of impeachment from the opposition, a motion that will be tabled in Parliament in the coming days. Fico has a narrow majority in the Slovak Parliament with 76 MPs out of a total of 150 seats and seems to be in more danger now than ever, as his openly pro-Russian stance has not only caused mass demonstrations in Bratislava but also discontent within his party.

Fico survived an assassination attempt against him in May 2024 when he was shot four times at close range on his way out of an emergency cabinet meeting held in a small town in the centre of the country. The perpetrator, a 71-year-old man, has been convicted of terrorism and is serving a prison sentence in a Slovakian jail.

Slovakia and in particular the Fico government is currently facing a major energy issue as despite being an EU member, Slovakia, like Hungary, has openly followed a pro-Russian path and has opposed any support for Kyiv.

In 2024 about 13.5 billion cubic meters of gas arrived from Ukrainian pipelines to the territories of central Europe including about 3 billion cubic meters for Slovak consumption. Fico has pointed out that the cost of changing energy supply exceeds 1.5 billion euros and is impossible for Bratislava’s budget to bear.
