Chania: 45-year-old remanded in custody for fatal accident that claimed Panagiotis’ life – Heartbreaking digures, his father and twin brother

The man faces felony charges and is being prosecuted under Article 290 of the Penal Code for reckless driving

Newsroom January 15 12:27

The 45-year-old man who caused the fatal accident in Chania, Crete, which took the life of 22-year-old Panagiotis Karatzis, was remanded in custody following his deposition.

The businessman was brought to court shortly before 10 a.m., and after his statement, both the investigator and prosecutor decided on his detention. He is facing felony charges and is being prosecuted under Article 290 of the Penal Code for reckless driving, which carries a sentence of up to ten years in prison.

During his deposition, the accused expressed remorse and apologized for the consequences of his actions.

Relatives and friends of 22-year-old Panagiotis Karatzis gathered outside the Chania courthouse from early in the morning while the 45-year-old was giving his deposition.

Among them were Panagiotis’ father and twin brother, as well as his close friend Dimitris, all waiting for the prosecutor and investigator’s decision on the 45-year-old.

“He left us so unfairly. I don’t even know what to say, honestly. It’s a series of mistakes that must be uncovered,” said Dimitris, visibly emotional, as he spoke about his friend, who lost his life in the accident “without being at fault for anything,” as he noted. “A very good person, a hardworking guy, always helping everyone, always with a smile on his face.”

When asked what might ease the pain, Panagiotis’ friend responded: “For his memory to be honored. That’s all that’s left now. His parents are devastated.”
