The Prime Minister went to the Presidential Palace on Monday morning, meeting Katerina Sakellaropoulou for the last time in her capacity as President of the Republic.

This appointment was postponed last week, when Kyriakos Mitsotakis, after informing her, nominated Kostasoulas for the post of President of the Republic.

In the dialogue they had in front of the cameras, Kyriakos Mitsotakis thanked Mrs. Sakellaropoulou. “I want to thank you, not only on an institutional but also on a personal level for the impeccable cooperation over the past five years. History records that you were the first woman President of the Hellenic Republic and that you gave the institution your own special characteristics in social issues, culture and the arts,” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said at the beginning of the debate.

Referring to the election of a new President of the Republic, he said: “What is most important is to complete the relevant procedures and forge national unity in terms of realism and truth. This is what I will seek to do as the head of the New Democracy Party.”

The Prime Minister reiterated his proposal for a one and six-year term of the President of the Republic, while closing by thanking Katerina Sakellaropoulou again, expressing the hope that she will continue to participate in public life.

For her part, Katerina Sakellaropoulou in turn thanked the Prime Minister for the cooperation, noting that institutional communication is very important in a democracy.

“Today there are many challenges that transcend our borders,” Sakellaropoulou said, calling for unity for the good of the country.
