14-year-old hospitalized in Volos after drinking 8 glasses of wine at a bar – 34-year-old owner acquitted

The 25-year-old employee of the business claimed that on the day the 14-year-old and her group were there, it was too crowded for them to check their IDs

Newsroom January 21 04:45

A 14-year-old girl ended up in the hospital on Saturday night after consuming an excessive amount of alcohol at a café-bar in central Volos.

According to the news outlet gegonotanews.gr, the minor was taken to the Emergency Department of Volos Hospital in a state of intoxication. Authorities were also called to the scene after being informed of the incident.

When police officers arrived at the Emergency Department, they found the girl lying on a stretcher, feeling dizzy but otherwise in stable condition. She cooperated fully with the officers, providing the necessary information. The police then contacted her parents, who were not in Volos as the girl lives in the city with her grandmother.

The girl reportedly explained to the police that at around 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, she went to the café-bar with her friends to have fun and ended up drinking a total of eight glasses of wine. Shortly afterward, she began feeling unwell and had to be taken to the hospital for medical attention.

34-Year-Old Bar Owner Acquitted

At midnight on Saturday, police visited the establishment that had served alcohol to the minor and arrested the acting manager, as the bar’s owner could not be located at the time.

A 25-year-old staff member working at the bar testified in court – at the Volos Single-Member Misdemeanor Court – that the 34-year-old acting manager was highly competent in his duties.

She stated that when she spots customers who appear to be under 18 years old, she asks to see their ID cards. If it turns out they are minors, she informs other staff members to ensure they are not served alcohol.

However, she admitted that on the previous Saturday, the bar was extremely busy, making it difficult to monitor everyone. As a result, the young girl and her friends managed to avoid detection and were served large quantities of wine.

The prosecutor, taking into account the 34-year-old manager’s good conduct and his assurance that he would be much more vigilant in the future, recommended his acquittal due to reasonable doubt. The court accepted the recommendation and acquitted him.
