Fisherman in Heraklion pulls parts of a warplane from his nets

The aircraft is most likely from World War II

Newsroom January 23 12:53

A fisherman from Heraklion stumbled upon an unprecedented sight when, a few days ago, in the area of Linoperamata at a depth of about 25 meters, he found parts of a warplane—most likely from World War II—caught in his fishing nets. These remains had never been discovered before.

The Heraklion Port Authority was immediately notified, and with the use of a crane, the wreckage of the old aircraft was retrieved. Following this, the process of evaluating the findings began in order to determine where they would be transferred.

As the head of the Heraklion Port Authority, Nikos Tsobanis, informed us, a team from the Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with the Air Force services, is assessing the findings. They will decide where to transfer the aircraft’s frame, which consists of two wings but lacks the fuselage.
