Stephen Fry in Athens: “The Acropolis Museum can house the sculptures – Let the British use replicas”

The renowned British actor stated that the Acropolis Museum is one of the best in the world

Newsroom January 30 01:30

Renowned British actor Stephen Fry has once again advocated for the return of the Parthenon Sculptures to Greece. Speaking at the Acropolis Museum on Wednesday evening, Fry emphasized that political will is needed from the UK to make this happen.

“We need to find common ground—words that satisfy both sides. ‘Collaboration’ is the key. We are in one of the finest museums in the world, fully capable of housing the Parthenon Sculptures currently in the British Museum,” Fry stated.

He suggested that the British Museum could embrace modern technology to create high-quality replicas of the sculptures, allowing the originals to be displayed in their rightful home.

Fry was in Athens for an event centered around his latest book, Odyssey, which explores timeless human themes still relevant today. He also discussed artificial intelligence, comparing its potential risks and rewards to the myth of Prometheus.

A Powerful Voice for Cultural Justice

Fry’s passionate defense of Greece’s claim during a recent Intelligence Squared debate gained international attention, adding momentum to the campaign for the sculptures’ return. Through his books, including Mythos, Heroes, and Troy, he has helped bring Greek mythology to a global audience.

Greek Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni praised Fry’s efforts, calling him a “symbolic ambassador of Greece and its culture worldwide.”

“The return of the Parthenon Sculptures is not just a Greek issue—it is a matter of global cultural justice. Sir Fry, your voice has been instrumental in strengthening this cause,” she said.
