State literary awards 2024: Pantelis Boukalas receives the grand prize for letters

Winners in the categories of literature, literary translation, and children's books

Author, poet, translator, and columnist Pantelis Boukalas is the honoree of this year’s State Literary Awards, announced today by the Ministry of Culture, as he is awarded the Grand Prize for Letters 2024 for his overall contribution to literature.

The State Novel Award 2024 is shared by Ioanna Bourazopoulou for her work The Dragon of Prespa III – The Memory of Ice (Kastaniotis Editions) and Ilias L. Papamoschos for his work Ascension (Patakis Editions).

The State Short Story-Novella Award goes to Akis Papantonis for his work The Last Bear of the Forest (Kichli Editions), while the State Poetry Award is awarded to Anna Griva for her work The Lost Goddess (Melani Editions).

Additionally, Myrtia Hellner is honored with the State Essay-Criticism Award for her work History of Archaeological Photography in Greece (OTAN Editions), and Dimitris G. Yfantis receives the State Testimony-Biography-Chronicle-Travel Writing Award for his work Makronisos. When “madness” gained a geographical designation. The State Award for a Debut Author 2024 is presented to Stavroula Papadaki for her work And What Will People Say? (Kappa Editions), while the Special State Award for a book that significantly promotes dialogue on sensitive social issues is awarded to Yiannis Nikoloudis for his work Empty Land (Patakis Editions).

An honorary distinction is also awarded to the literary magazine Kondyloforos.

STATE LITERARY TRANSLATION AWARDS 2024

The State Award for the Translation of a Foreign Literary Work into Greek 2024 is unanimously awarded to Rena Chatchout for her translation of Charles Dickens’ The Pickwick Papers (Volumes I & II) (Gutenberg Editions).

The State Award for the Rendering of Ancient Greek Literature into Modern Greek 2024 is awarded by majority vote to Stefanos Paraskevaidis for his translation of the collective work In the Time of Plague: Epidemics in Antiquity That Defied Reason (Crete University Press).

The State Award for the Translation of a Greek Literary Work into a Foreign Language 2024 is awarded by majority vote, shared between José Antonio Moreno Jurado for his translation of Antología de poesía chipriota (1821-2021) (Centro de Estudios Bizantinos, Neogriegos y Chipriotas Editions) and Hero Hokwerda for his translation of Andreas Embirikos’ De amuletten van de liefde en van de wapenen (The Charms of Love and Weapons: Argo or The Voyage of the Balloon. Zemphira or The Secret of Pasiphae. Beatrice or The Love of Buffalo Bill) (Ta Grammata Editions).

STATE CHILDREN’S BOOK AWARDS 2024

The State Award for Children’s Literary Book 2024 is awarded by majority vote to Foteini Fragkouli for her work History Watches (illustrated by Evi Tsaknia, Patakis Editions).

The State Award for Young Adult Literary Book 2024 is awarded by majority vote to Spyros Giannakopoulos for his work Cosmonaut (Patakis Editions).

The State Award for Illustrated Children’s Book 2024 is shared between illustrator Daniela Stamatiadi and author Maria Lykartsi for their work Normally (Kastaniotis Editions) and illustrator Foteini Stefanidi for her work The Blackbird (Kaleidoscope Editions).

The State Award for Children’s Non-Fiction Book 2024 is shared between Filippos Mandilaras for his work Escape Book: The Antikythera Mechanism (illustrated by Niki Leondiou, Papadopoulos Editions) and Mariza Dekastro for her work Alki Zei: Eyes Like the Blue Sea (illustrated by Dimitra Miliouri, Metaichmio Editions).
