Election of the President of the Republic: Third vote unsuccessful – Tasoulas again receives 160 votes

Kostas Tasoulas is set to be elected to the highest state office in the upcoming fourth ballot, scheduled for February 12 – Tasoulas secured 160 votes, Louka Katseli 40, and Giannitsis 34

Newsroom February 6 11:13

As expected, the third round of voting for the election of a new President of the Republic, held in the Parliament’s plenary session on Thursday morning, yielded no result.

The candidacy of Mr. Konstantinos Tasoulas received 160 affirmative votes, falling short of the constitutional threshold of 180 “yes” votes.

The outcome of the roll-call vote mirrors the results of the two previous rounds, meaning that Mr. Tasoulas has effectively “locked in” the majority of 160 MPs, which will secure his election to the highest state office on February 12, when the constitutional requirement will drop to an absolute majority of 151 MPs.

A detailed breakdown of today’s results is as follows:

  • Mr. Konstantinos Tasoulas received 160 affirmative votes from 156 MPs of New Democracy, former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, and independent MPs Marios Salmas, Pavlos Sarakis, and Haris Katsivardas.
  • Ms. Louka Katseli, nominated by SYRIZA’s parliamentary group, received 40 votes from 26 SYRIZA MPs, 11 from the New Left, and independents Areti Papaioannou, Athina Linou, and Ioannis Sarakiotis.
  • Mr. Tasos Giannitsis, nominated by PASOK, secured 34 votes from 31 MPs of the Harilaou Trikoupi faction and independent MPs Baran Burhan, Rania Thraskia, and Petros Pappas.
  • Mr. Kostas Kyriakou, a candidate proposed by the “Niki” parliamentary group, received 14 votes from 10 MPs of “Niki” and independent MPs Dionysis Valtogiannis, Giorgos Manousos, Giannis Dimitrokallis, and Kostas Floros.

A total of 52 MPs voted “present”, including members from:

  • The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) (21 MPs),
  • Greek Solution (11 MPs),
  • Course of Freedom (6 MPs),
  • Spartans (5 MPs),
  • And those aligned with the Democracy Movement (Rallia Christidou, Kyriaki Malama, Theodora Tzakri, Alexandros Avlonitis), Giota Poulou, Michalis Chourdakis, and Evangelos Apostolakis (formerly of SYRIZA).

It should be noted that at noon on February 12, when the much-anticipated “white smoke” is expected from the decisive vote, Parliament Speaker Nikitas Kaklamanis will visit Mr. Tasoulas’ office to formally announce the final result.

The swearing-in ceremony for the new President of the Republic will take place before the national assembly on March 13, 2025, marking the conclusion of outgoing President Katerina Sakellaropoulou’s term.
