Middle East: Hamas retreats – Will continue to release hostages as agreed

Egypt and Qatar stressed that the obstacles that blocked the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the previous days have been overcome

Newsroom February 13 02:35

The Hamas announced at noon Thursday that it agreed to continue implementing the ceasefire agreement and that it would proceed with the release of hostages held in Gaza in exchange for Palestinian security detainees held in Israel, according to the timetable outlined in the agreement. Under the terms agreed, the next hostage release is expected to take place on Saturday.

The Palestinian group’s statement came a day after a Hamas delegation led by its top official, Khalil al-Haya, arrived in Cairo for talks with mediators.

Hamas said Egyptian and Qatari mediators promised to remove obstacles blocking the continued flow of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

Al Jazeera, meanwhile, reported that the mediators reaffirmed their commitment to implement the humanitarian provisions of the agreement, in full consultation with Israel.
