Macron convenes a summit of the European core after the cold shock from the US

The extraordinary meeting on Monday will be attended by France, Germany, Italy, Germany, Poland and Denmark, and possibly the Netherlands - Response to Donald Trump's diplomatic initiatives on Ukraine and statements that Europe will have an opinion but will not attend the talks

Newsroom February 15 08:50

French President Emanuel Macron has invited European leaders to a meeting in Paris on Monday, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski announced Saturday. The subject of the meeting is the situation in Ukraine and the emerging peace talks.

The meeting will be attended by the countries of the “Weimar +” group at the level of heads of state. France, Germany, Italy, Germany, Poland, and Denmark are participating in the group, with the participation of the Netherlands also possible.

The meeting comes just days after Donald Trump’s diplomatic initiatives on Ukraine, as well as a speech by US Vice President J.D. Vance’s warming of European powers.

In a post, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk wrote that he would take part at the invitation of President Emmanuel Macron and added that “we must show our strength and unity.”

It will be recalled that on Friday, Emmanuel Macron assured his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky that “Ukrainians are the only ones who can lead the exchanges for a stable and lasting peace” with Russia.

In a parallel development, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said from the Munich conference that Europe would have to take tough decisions and make sacrifices to manage the threats it faces and ensure its security.

“We must prepare ourselves. We will have to face difficult days, take complex decisions and even make sacrifices that we did not expect until now in order to ensure this security,” Barrot said, speaking to reporters at the conference.

Barrot also said he believes, following talks he had with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, that the US government is still forming its view on how the US should handle the crisis in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, four European sources quoted by Reuters said the US has sent a diplomatic document to European capitals asking them what they can contribute to security guarantees for Ukraine. According to the sources, the document asks questions such as possible troop contributions in the future, with two of the sources adding that it was sent earlier this week.

Meanwhile, EU foreign ministers had already called an emergency meeting at 08:30 on Sunday to discuss relations with the United States, as well as the war in Ukraine.
