Patient at Daphni kills 44-year-old female patient with a glass shard – The victim had been admitted just one day earlier

The 47-year-old perpetrator is being sought – Reports indicate he had been transferred to Daphni in November by court order after being deemed not criminally responsible for a previous offense

Newsroom February 19 08:36

Shocking details have emerged about the crime that took place in the early hours of today at the Athens Psychiatric Hospital in Daphni. According to reports, the 44-year-old patient, who was fatally attacked with a piece of glass by a 47-year-old fellow patient, had been admitted for treatment only yesterday, Tuesday.

According to the same sources, the 47-year-old had been at Daphni since last November, when he was transferred there by court order after being declared not criminally responsible for an offense he had committed, based on Article 69 of the Penal Code.

The murder occurred at around 4:00 a.m. in the 10th psychiatric ward for acute cases, where both the 47-year-old perpetrator and the 44-year-old victim were hospitalized.

Following the attack, the 47-year-old allegedly walked out of the room where the crime took place, announced what he had done to the stunned nurses, and fled.

Police forces arrived at the psychiatric hospital early in the morning and are conducting investigations both inside and outside the facility to locate the 47-year-old suspect.

“Psychiatric hospitals are not prisons. This longstanding issue must be addressed: individuals covered under Article 69 of the Penal Code should no longer be hospitalized in psychiatric institutions. These are people who have committed serious crimes and felonies, but are deemed not criminally responsible by the courts and placed in psychiatric hospitals. As a result, they are housed together with other mentally ill patients and pose a risk to both patients and staff,” stated Michalis Giannakos, president of POEDIN.
