Damage to the archaeological site of Temple of Olympian Zeus from the incidents – They broke marbles from the temple

According to the Ministry of Culture they removed marble fragments from the paving of the ancient temple which the anarchists threw towards the police forces

Damages at the Archaeological site of the Temple Olympian Zeus and the shops at Louloudadika occurred during the clashes that broke out at the rally for the two-year anniversary of the Tempi train crash in central Athens.

The clashes begun after the victims relatives’ speeches, with the center of Athens turning into a battlefield when masked anarchists took action by attacking with anti-riot police. Some of them entered the perimeter of the archaeological site at the Pillars of Temple Olympian Zeus, throwing stones at police forces outside.

According to the Ministry of Culture, the archaeological site of the Temple of Olympian Zeus was damaged during the incidents. Specifically, there was damage to the fencing and marble pieces were removed from the original pavement of the ancient temple which the anarchists threw towards the Hellenic Police.

The marble fragments were recovered by the staff of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Athens City, according to the statement.

In addition, locks and fire extinguishers were removed. All have already been replaced by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Athens City.
