Konstantinos Tasoulas: Tomorrow the new President of the Republic will be sworn in before the Plenary of the Parliament

Tomorrow at 11:00 the new President of the Republic Konstantinos Tasoulas, who succeeds former President of the Council of State, Katerina Sakellaropoulou.

According to Article 33 of the Constitution, the President of the Republic, before assuming office, takes the following oath before the Parliament: “I swear in the name of the Holy and Unanimous and Indivisible Trinity to uphold the Constitution and the laws, to ensure their faithful observance, to defend the national independence and integrity of the country, to protect the rights and freedoms of the Greeks and to serve the general interest and progress of the Greek People.”

Former Speaker of the Parliament Konstantinos Tasoulas was elected to the office of President of the Republic on February 12, 2025, receiving the affirmative vote of 160 MPs. There were also 39 “present” while 24 MPs chose to abstain.

The number of MPs who chose to abstain was 39.

Tomorrow’s session will be chaired by the first deputy speaker of the Parliament, Ioannis Plakiotakis who will read the address of the Speaker of the Parliament Nikitas Kaklamanis and the counter-address of Mr. Tasoulas during the announcement of the result of the roll call vote to the new President of the Republic.

Subsequently, the second deputy speaker of the Parliament, G. Georgantas to accompany His Beatitude Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, Mr. Ieronymos and the accompanying members of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece to the hall of the Parliament.

The new President of the Republic, Konstantinos Tasoulas, will be welcomed at the entrance of the Unknown Soldier in the House of Parliament by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the Speaker of the Greek Parliament Nikitas Kaklamanis. Armed Forces units will be lined up at the monument for inspection by the President of the Republic.

After the recitation of the arranged prayers, the President-elect of the Republic will place his hand on the Holy Gospel and repeat the oath, which will be read by the Archbishop of Athens and All Greece.

Then the protocol of the swearing-in of the President of the Republic will be signed in triplicate by the sworn-in President of the Republic, the President of the Government, the Speaker of the Parliament and the Archbishop of Athens and All Greece.

Finally, Mr. Tasoulas will leave the hall after greeting the leaders of the parties.

After the swearing-in ceremony, President of the Republic Konstantinos Tasoulas will lay a wreath at the Monument of the Unknown Soldier.

Mr. Tasoulas is the ninth person to ascend to the highest state office since 1974. He was preceded by Michael Stasinopoulos (1974-1975), Constantine Tsatsos (1975-1980), Konstantinos Karamanlis (1980-1985 and 1990-1995), Christos Sarzetakis (1985-1990), Konstantinos Stephanopoulos (1995-2005), Karolos Papoulias (2005-2015), Prokopios Pavlopoulos (2015-2020) and Katerina Sakellaropoulou (2020-2025).

The new President of the Republic was born in Ioannina in 1959, is married with two children, and studied law in Athens. He was first elected as a member of parliament with New Democracy in 2000 and was re-elected in 2004, 2007, 2009, 2012 (twice), 2015 (twice), 2019 and 2023 (twice). In 2006 he was appointed, by the Prime Minister, Deputy Parliamentary Representative of New Democracy. In 2007 he was appointed Deputy Minister of National Defence. In February 2010 he was elected Secretary General of the Parliamentary Group of the New Democracy. In 2014 he was appointed Minister of Culture and Sports until January 2015. In 2018 he was appointed General Rapporteur of the New Democracy Party for the Constitutional Review. Finally, he was elected President of the Hellenic Parliament in 2019, in May 2023 and in July 2023.

Mr. Tasoulas was also the private secretary of the late Evangelios Averof-Tositsas, Honorary President of the ND from 1981 to 1990 and special advisor to the Ministries of National Economy, Trade and Agriculture (1989-1990). He was President of the Export Promotion Organisation (EPO) from 1990 to 1993. He was elected Municipal Councillor of the Municipality of Kifissia in 1990. In 1994 he was elected Mayor of Kifissia. In June 2013 he was appointed President of the Institute of Democracy “Konstantinos Karamanlis”.
