Odyssey: A spectacular landing in Methoni with triremes, helmets, and shields for the epic film shoot – Stunning images

The highly anticipated film Odyssey, directed by Christopher Nolan, continues its grand production in Methoni

Newsroom March 13 06:31

New behind-the-scenes images have been released from the Castle, where key sequences were filmed. The shoot at the historic site was scheduled to wrap up today, but strong winds delayed production, according to reports from eleftheriaonline.gr.

Meanwhile, additional scenes were captured in an olive grove near Kainourio Chorio, featuring Tom Holland as Telemachus, Jon Bernthal as Menelaus, and Lupita Nyong’o. Matt Damon, who plays the legendary Odysseus, had recently arrived for filming but briefly departed, set to return soon for the next phase of the production. The sets meticulously recreated ancient Sparta, with tight security measures ensuring minimal leaks of plot details and exclusive footage.

A Cinematic Invasion

The spectacle has drawn crowds of onlookers eager to catch a glimpse of the A-list cast and the breathtaking set pieces. Enthusiastic locals from across Messinia have joined the production, either as extras or as part of the crew. The Cultural Center of Methoni, along with temporarily closed restaurants, has been transformed into waiting areas for background actors.

One of the most remarkable additions to the production has been the award-winning Norwegian rowing team Draken Harald Hårfagre, whose members have been stationed in Messinia for days, training to portray the skilled oarsmen of an authentic wooden pentekonter.

With a staggering estimated budget of $250 million, the film’s financial footprint in Methoni alone has already surpassed €1 million, fueling excitement and boosting local businesses.

A Mythical Journey Continues

The next major filming location will be the legendary Voidokilia Beach and Nestor’s Cave, where the dramatic Cyclops Polyphemus sequence will unfold. The unique rock formations and deep mythological significance of the site will serve as the perfect setting for one of the film’s most intense moments. In preparation, a colossal six-meter-tall mechanical humanoid figure is under construction, set to bring the fearsome Polyphemus to life. Extreme care is being taken to protect the environment, with specialized geotextiles and sand layers ensuring the landscape remains untouched.

Audiovisual production in Greece is a driver of economic growth, with revenues of almost €1 billion according to an SPI study

On March 21, Almyrolakkas Beach will be transformed into a traditional Greek village, built using eco-friendly materials to preserve the natural surroundings. That night, a series of fiery special effects will light up the set, with expert pyrotechnicians overseeing the spectacular sequence.

As production marches forward, the golden dunes and crystal-clear waters of Voidokilia promise to add a dreamlike, cinematic quality to Odyssey, ensuring that Nolan’s vision of Homer’s epic tale will be nothing short of legendary.
