Trump on Ukraine ceasefire: “I hope Russia does the right thing”

U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his hope for a ceasefire in Ukraine following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s conditional acceptance of the proposal

“I hope Russia does the right thing,” Trump stated during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House.

While he called Putin’s statement encouraging, he noted that it was not a complete commitment. Trump also expressed his willingness to speak directly with the Russian president regarding the ceasefire proposal.

He informed reporters that his envoy, Steve Witkoff, is engaged in serious discussions in Russia. Witkoff is expected to meet with Putin later in the day.
