Tragedy on the Egnatia: Cameras will provide answers – What the first statements and information about the two dead men show

Five injured from the accident

Newsroom April 16 08:03

The Ukrainian driver of the truck involved in the tragic car crash on Tuesday afternoon with two dead and four injured at the Polymylou tollgate on the Egnatia Odos road in Kozani is expected to be brought before the prosecutor today.

At the same time, investigations by the traffic police into the circumstances under which the crash occurred are ongoing while the fire brigade is also involved as officers from the Arson Crimes Directorate have taken samples from each vehicle to see if there was any flammable material or a LPG tank.

At the same time, video footage from the security camera servers, which were completely destroyed by the fire after the two cars and the truck collided, is also expected.

Information from initial reports suggests that the driver of the truck was speeding despite the fact that the area was in thick fog.

It will be recalled that among the initial scenarios for how the accident occurred was that one of the two cars was reversing into the e-pass lane as the barrier did not open, resulting in the two vehicles initially colliding and then the truck dragging them into the toll booths.

Although the bodies of the two people who died in the accident have been charred and it is impossible to immediately identify them, information from the website kozan.gr refers to a couple from the municipality of Servia who had come from abroad to spend the Easter holidays in Greece.

The five injured were taken to hospitals in Veroia and Kozani and their state of health is not a cause for concern.

One of the injured, a woman, has fractures in her spine and ribs, while an MRI scan is expected for the second injured man to determine the severity of his injuries.

In addition, three injured were evacuated to the Kozani “Mamatseio” Hospital, according to the commander Dimitris Siolos. Siolos told kozan.gr that they are two men aged 33 and 35, as well as a 26-year-old woman. The three wounded are being treated out of danger and will remain in the surgical clinic for observation.
