Trump on the deal with Britain: Economic security is also national

In joint statements with the British Prime Minister, who was speaking on speakerphone, the US president extolled an agreement that had been pending for years

Newsroom May 8 07:00

Deals to roll back his tariff decisions were promised by Donald Trump – and within 100 days – and now it’s time to mention one of the most important, that of Britain.

In remarks Thursday from the Oval Office at the White House, the president of the United States spoke of the scope of the deal

Economic security is also national security, Trump then stressed, referring specifically to steel as an important factor in the deal.

British Prime Minister, Kir Starmer, also intervened in an open hearing afterwards,

In earlier statements, Trump had said it was “a full and comprehensive” agreement, though London declined to comment on those characterizations. Starmers’ statements were expected later in the day.

In his much-discussed announcements on tariffs on almost every country in the world, Trump had not even excluded perhaps his closest ally, Britain, which he “tipped” with a 10% tariff, although for some other goods (steel, aluminum and cars) the tariffs were as high as 25%.

The BBC comments that the US-UK trade deal is a long-standing pending issue between the two countries. Contacts had already begun under Trump’s first term and continued under the Biden administration. He adds, however, that in practice it is not a “full and comprehensive” agreement, as Trump promises, but more a statement of intent for further consultations.
