Britain: Navy chief resigns over love affair with officer – Admiral Ki, 59, father of 3 children

In 2022 he proclaimed a doctrine of zero tolerance in the Navy for those who engage in misconduct

Newsroom May 10 12:10

Surprise has been caused in Britain by the resignation of navy chief Admiral Ben Key after an investigation was launched against him for having an affair with an officer.

Britain’s Ministry of Defence initially said the resignation of Key, who was due to retire this summer, was for “private reasons.”

The Financial Times, however, revealed that the “private reasons” related to the relationship the 59-year-old admiral was found to have had with a junior female officer.

It followed a Sun report that Admiral Key, who is married and has three children, is being investigated for breaching the British Navy’s strict service code that prohibits sexual relationships between officers and their subordinates.

According to Sky News, the “scandal stone” is reportedly not a direct associate of the admiral, but she is a member of the British Navy.

When 2022 condemned sexual harassment

In 2022, a year after being appointed as Britain’s navy chief, Ben Key vowed to “root out” sexual harassment behaviour from the force.

“Those who do not want to serve on the basis of the values and principles of life in the UK Armed Forces will be removed,” he said at the time.

And a year later he had announced a doctrine of “zero tolerance of unacceptable behaviour” in the British Navy.

Although Admiral Key is, according to British media, considered popular within the ranks of Britain’s navy, there have been reports of improper behaviour. Sources tell the Daily Mail that Admiral Key “can be very rude” with a second source saying he “told a senior officer with a younger wife that he was a laughing stock for doing so.”

Admiral Ki joined the Navy as a cadet in 1984 and commanded two frigates, a minesweeper and the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious.

The Navy lists integrity as one of its six core values. According to the Navy, “Integrity is the quality of a person’s character that includes honesty, integrity, trustworthiness and selflessness. It is a prerequisite for both leadership and fellowship. If we do not maintain our integrity, others will not trust us and teamwork will suffer.”
