Concern about the earthquakes in Evia: 3 houses to be demolished, damage to over 50 – See video

The 4.5 is not the maximum magnitude that can be caused in the area, there can be a bigger earthquake", said Professor of Seismology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Manolis Skordilis

Newsroom May 19 04:13

Successive earthquakes in Northern Euboea in the last 24 hours have caused particular concern among residents, while at the same time, seismologists are keeping a close eye on the development of the phenomenon.

The mayor of Agia Anna-Mantoudi, Giorgos Tsapourniotis, said more than 50 houses have been damaged by the earthquakes that have also been felt in Attica. He noted that several houses have been found unsuitable based on the checks made so far in the area.

Meanwhile, in the municipality of Mantoudiou—Lini—Agia Anna in Evia, the DEFK (Directorate of Natural Disaster Impact Rehabilitation) teams decided to demolish three houses after the inspections.

So far, the strongest earthquake in the region was a magnitude 4.5 earthquake that occurred shortly after 3 a.m. Monday, which was felt in many areas of the island.

Scordillis: Seismic excitation is underway; there could be a bigger earthquake

“We have seismic excitation, three earthquakes over 4 Richter in 4 hours, the biggest 4.5. We’re not talking about an aftershock sequence, we’re talking about one seismic excitation. Information from historical data indicates that there has not been a major earthquake in this area. The 4.5 is not the maximum magnitude that can be caused in the area; there can be a bigger earthquake, but the area. Cannot give more than 6 Richter, “said Professor of Seismology AUTH, Manolis Skordilis, to Alpha.

“From there we have to treat it (the earthquakes) as an excitation in progress and be mainly careful, which is mainly about houses that have been damaged…We cannot say exactly how it will develop…What matters is to see what the effects are on the buildings. If there are damaged houses, they should not be inhabited. In damaged houses, there may be collapses,” the professor continued.

“In houses that have been classified as yellow, engineers will have to see whether they can suffer further damage,” Manolis Skordilis added.

Leccas: We will have 4-5 Richter earthquakes in the next few days

Speaking to ERT about today’s earthquake and those that preceded it in the past 24 hours, the president of the OASP, Euthymios Lekkas, said that “we will have such earthquakes of 4-5 Richter for the next few days. We say this because in the previous earthquake, excitations from the same area, we had such a picture.”

As he explained, “the seismic potential gives us such a picture with 4-5 Richter earthquakes evolving within 4-5 days.”
