“Prolamvano” program: 65,000 citizens discovered undiagnosed conditions thanks to preventive screenings

Most of the cases—approximately 49,000—are linked to the "Fofi Gennimata" program for breast cancer prevention. Over 2.5 million citizens have received free check-ups through the actions included in "Prolamvano."

Newsroom May 26 04:52

More than 65,000 early diagnoses or detections of preliminary findings, significantly increasing the chances of full recovery, have been made to date thanks to the preventive screenings under the “Prolamvano” health initiative, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Health.

The majority—about 49,000 cases—are associated with the “Fofi Gennimata” breast cancer prevention program, which marked the beginning of free preventive screenings for vulnerable age groups three years ago.

Nearly 9,000 biopsies have been performed on citizens who took self-tests for colorectal cancer prevention, and several surgeries have taken place. Over 5,200 women have been referred for further evaluation under the cervical cancer screening program.

Another 4,000 people have been referred for ischemia diagnostic testing under the largest subprogram of “Prolamvano,” which targets cardiovascular disease prevention and covers a wide age range from 30 to 70 years old.

“We’re talking about tens of thousands of lives saved thanks to preventive exams. There’s really nothing more to add,” emphasized a senior government official involved in coordinating efforts between the Health Ministry and the Prime Minister’s Office.

The same source added that a key achievement of “Prolamvano” is cultivating a culture of prevention in Greece—something that was previously lacking but will be invaluable if it takes root.

Over 2.5 Million Citizens Screened for Free

Participation in these four major programs—and in additional smaller-scale initiatives under “Prolamvano,” launched by the government in 2022—has been substantial. To date, over 2.5 million citizens have taken advantage of the opportunity to get tested at no cost at 15,000 health facilities.

Within the “Fofi Gennimata” program, aimed at women aged 45 to 74, a total of 765,065 digital mammograms have been performed. For cervical cancer prevention, 370,573 women aged 21 to 65 have been screened.

In the area of colorectal cancer prevention, 808,356 citizens have completed self-tests, and 25,779 colonoscopies have been conducted.

So far, 512,593 people have undergone blood tests for cardiovascular health. Those found to be at increased cardiovascular risk receive additional tests, such as electrocardiograms, blood pressure measurements, and echocardiograms. If needed, the diagnostic cycle continues with further testing for ischemia.

How Both Insured and Uninsured Citizens Can Participate

Anyone who hasn’t yet undergone preventive screening can join the “Prolamvano” program completely free of charge, regardless of whether they are insured or uninsured, simply by using their AMKA (social security number).

For those who have activated paperless prescriptions, the process is even easier—they receive their electronic referral via SMS and/or email.

Even without paperless prescription service, individuals can simply visit https://proliptikes.gov.gr/, find participating centers in their area, and book an appointment quickly and easily using their AMKA.
