During a press conference five hours after the incident, police assistant chief Jennie Sims emphasized that the event is not being treated as a terrorist act. She stated that a 53-year-old white British man remains in custody and is believed to be the driver of the vehicle.

“What I can tell you is that we believe this is a standalone incident, and at this point, we are not seeking anyone else in connection with it,” she added.

Video footage shows a car hitting Liverpool’s victory parade, injuring numerous spectators.

The parade, which drew hundreds of thousands of supporters to celebrate Liverpool’s league victory, was nearing its conclusion when the vehicle accelerated into the gathered crowd. Police and emergency services responded promptly, with paramedics already present along the route.

Eyewitness Accounts and Response

Witnesses described scenes reminiscent of an attack. Harori Rasheed, who was at the scene with his family, reported that the driver appeared to deliberately accelerate toward the crowd and that the vehicle struck bodies and caused chaos. Others recounted a pursuit by bystanders attempting to stop the vehicle.

The police had to use force to swiftly remove the driver, preventing a potential lynching by furious fans immediately after the incident. Video footage shows the attacker being dragged from the vehicle amid angry protests.

The Timeline

The terrifying moment unfolded just after 6 p.m. local time (8 p.m. Greece time), when a vehicle sped into the crowd on Water Street, near the end of Liverpool’s trophy parade. Footage captures the chaos, with injured individuals on the ground and screams of alarm.

Authorities continue to investigate to determine the motives and reasons behind the attack.

Official Statements and Community Reactions

Harori Rasheed described the scene as a “deliberate acceleration” into the crowd, with sounds of bodies being struck by the vehicle. Others reported a chase by bystanders trying to intervene.
