Over 140 syringe attacks across France at music festivals – Many victims were minors

Some victims required toxicology tests - At least 12 arrests made

Newsroom June 23 09:04

French police have made at least 12 arrests after 145 people reported being attacked with syringes during street music festivals over the weekend.

Millions of people took to the streets across France on Saturday night for the Fête de la Musique (“Music Festival”).

The Interior Ministry stated that 145 victims across the country reported being pricked with syringes during outdoor music events held nationwide.

Paris police reported 13 cases in the capital, including a 15-year-old girl and an 18-year-old boy in separate incidents, according to The Guardian.

Across France, 12 suspects have been arrested, including four individuals in the southwestern city of Angoulême, suspected of pricking around 50 victims. Two people were arrested in the northwestern city of Metz, where the victims were minors.

Incidents were also recorded in Évreux and Rouen in Normandy, while in the city of Tours, 13 women reported that someone had pricked them with a syringe.

Authorities did not specify whether these cases involved drugs commonly used in sexual assaults. However, they did confirm that some victims were taken to the hospital for toxicological testing.

Prior to the festival, feminist influencer Abrège Soeur had issued an online warning that posts had been circulating on social media encouraging the targeting of women with syringes. However, it remained unclear where such posts had appeared or who was behind them.

Back in 2022, there was another wave of reports about syringe attacks targeting both women and men at clubs, bars, music events, and even theaters. The government advised people going out to be vigilant, to report immediately to police, and to get a toxicological test if they suspect they may have been drugged via a syringe prick.
