North Korea: Kim Jong-un covers coffins of soldiers killed in Ukraine with national flags

Pyongyang confirmed for the first time in April that it had sent troops to fight for Moscow in the war in Ukraine

Newsroom June 30 07:30

Images of Kim Jong-un draping North Korean flags over coffins—at what appears to be a ceremony repatriating soldiers killed while fighting for Russia against Ukraine—were aired by the country’s state media.

Pyongyang confirmed for the first time in April that it had sent troops to fight for Moscow in the war in Ukraine, following the signing of a military cooperation pact between Kim and Vladimir Putin last summer.

In a series of photographs shown during a performance by North Korean and Russian artists—held to mark the first anniversary of the treaty—Kim is seen standing beside rows of coffins, covering them with flags. North Korean state television, KRT, broadcast the performance, which was attended by Russia’s Minister of Culture, Olga Lyubimova.
