Wedding gift of billions: Bezos, Sanchez and the possible takeover of Condé Nast

Jeff Bezos is rumoured to be considering a takeover of Condé Nast as a gift to Lauren Sanchez, against a backdrop of behind-the-scenes moves, magazine covers and Anna Windour exit scenarios

Newsroom July 9 03:00

Jeff Bezos appears to be considering a multi-billion-dollar investment as a personal gift to his new wife, Lauren Sanchez, according to a report in the Daily Mail. The business and personal move may involve the purchase of Condé Nast, the famed publishing group that owns publications such as Vogue and Vanity Fair.

According to sources, Condé Nast staff are already convinced that something is up. Sanchez’s appearance on the cover of Vogue on the couple’s wedding day, June 27, is reportedly being interpreted by many as a sign of behind-the-scenes developments. She is considered by many to be an “unexpected choice for the cover,” which adds to the speculation.

The Newhouse family, which has retained ownership of Condé Nast since 1959, is said to be in the process of divesting, while a series of layoffs within the organisation have intensified suspicions of a possible sale. As the Daily Mail reports, “in New York, they are downsizing the business – a classic sign that a takeover is being prepared.”

“Anna owns shares in the company and could benefit a lot from a sale,” said one source. Another added, “Jeff has the resources, and Lauren is very smart. Serious talks are happening.”

For now, there are no clear signs of a formal deal. Bezos and Sanchez are still on their honeymoon in Europe after a lavish wedding in Venice with their children. Still, the potential Condé Nast deal continues to draw attention—not just for its financial value, but also for what it could mean for the future of fashion, media, and billionaire investments.
