Papastavrou: The hydrocarbon exploration plan and timeline are being followed – Greece has all the prerequisites for investors to feel safe

"We are the strong and stable player in the Eastern Mediterranean who has acquired major energy significance for the U.S."

Newsroom July 15 10:52

Greece is proceeding, securing and exercising its rights with prudence and national responsibility, stated Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou, in response to Libya’s verbal note to the United Nations.

“We reject any reaction or action stemming from invalid and baseless agreements. We are following a plan that has been in motion since March 26. The country is present at the European Commission, in Houston, which is the base of the two companies conducting the surveys. In an unpredictable international environment, Greece is present everywhere, actively exercising its sovereign rights. We have a plan and timeline that are being adhered to, and we are optimistic that the tender will result in a contractor for hydrocarbon exploration,” said Mr. Papastavrou in an interview with Open TV.

He added:
“Our country is a member of the EU, NATO, and the UN Security Council. It has deterrent capabilities, a prime minister who implements reformist policies—in short, Greece has all the conditions needed for any investor to feel secure in coming here.”

“In the Eastern Mediterranean, we are the strong and stable player, and we’ve gained significant energy importance for the U.S., given that a large portion of liquefied LNG arrives at Revithoussa, making us a hub,” the Minister of Environment and Energy emphasized.

On Migration Measures:
Regarding migration, Mr. Papastavrou stated:
“Greece is a state governed by the rule of law and adheres to international norms. But that doesn’t mean I don’t have a duty to protect national security and society.”

“Migration won’t go away because it has become a business. Europe has taken an introspective approach to this issue. Haftar must choose whether he wants to align with Europe or move away. We can’t wait for the EU’s decisions. As the Prime Minister said, we will do whatever it takes to safeguard national security,” he added.

He concluded with the statement:
“It is not far-right policy to put an end to the trafficking of human souls.”
