Middle East: Egypt indignant with Hamas’ stance on negotiations – accuses it of delays

Cairo "puts pressure on Hamas to accept the proposed agreement" for a new ceasefire in the Gaza Strip

Newsroom July 18 10:54

Signs of escalating tensions are being recorded behind the scenes in the Gaza ceasefire negotiations, with Egypt appearing particularly outraged by Hamas‘s stance, according to an Arab diplomat who spoke to the Times of Israel.

According to the diplomat, the Egyptian delegation in Doha, where indirect talks are continuing, threatened the head of the Hamas delegation, Halil al-Haya, with expulsion and insulted him for his persistent refusal to accept the cease-fire proposal.

The same diplomat confirmed earlier reports, stressing that Kairo is “putting pressure on Hamas to accept the deal”. Indicative of the discomfort is the harsh language used at the meeting, which a second source involved in the mediation process said reflected Egypt’s outrage at the “deliberate obstructionism”of the Palestinian organization.

Despite the Egyptian anger, mediators believe the obstacle can be overcome and that an agreement remains possible in the coming days.

New Israeli charter under consideration by Hamas

At the same time, Hamas has yet to respond to new mapping proposals submitted this week by Israel, which envisage a partial withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza during the 60-day ceasefire being negotiated. The new proposal is seen as a “slightly tempered version” of earlier plans and Hamas’ official reaction is expected.
