Scattered fires in Feneos – Over 11,000 acres of forest burned

Prosecution for felony for the two arrested - Remain on the spot strong forces of the Fire Department

Newsroom July 24 07:34

A major battle was waged for a second day by hundreds of firefighters and volunteers to bring under control the large fire in Feneos, Corinthia, which was burning forest and grassland.

While early Tuesday, the situation seemed to have improved, large flare-ups in an area that had not burned mobilized the authorities and residents. After hours of fighting, late Wednesday night and into Thursday morning, there was no longer an active front, but scattered outbreaks being treated.

Initial estimates, as meteo.gr reports, from very high-resolution data from the WorldView-3 satellite (VHR2 sensor) that passed over the area at noon Wednesday, indicate that by 12:23 p.m. Wednesday, approximately 11,450 acres of forest and grassland had burned in the areas between Kastania, Lauka, Mosia and Feneos Plateau.

During the resurgence on Wednesday, the front moved towards the community of Mati. Very large was the mobilization of the Fire Department, but also from the residents of the area, who with agricultural machinery and water trucks, were in the plain of Feneos, so that the fire did not pass to the grain.

Until late Wednesday night, 360 firefighters with 15 teams of hikers, 75 vehicles were operating at the site, while volunteers were also assisting.

Earlier, 22 aircraft and 15 helicopters were also operating, which were withdrawn and will rejoin the firefight at first light.

Meanwhile, residents in the areas of Mati, Achladea and Amigdalea in Corinth were sent 112 to evacuate to Ancient Feneos (Kalyvia).

Two slightly injured

An ambulance from the Gouras Health Centre picked up an ex-serving firefighter who was operating at the scene to transport him to Corinth Hospital. According to reports, the firefighter suffered minor burns.

In addition, another was removed from the scene with slight respiratory problems.
