Lake Agia in Chania is drying up – Wetland under threat, see photos

Lake Agia, one of the most important wetlands of Chania and Crete, has been facing a dramatic drop in water levels in recent weeks

Newsroom August 18 08:20

According to zarpanews.gr, the situation is described as highly critical. The lake is part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas, hosting more than 200 species of birds, and is a popular destination for visitors.

Water Levels Dangerously Low

The water has receded so much that the bottom of the lake is now visible. Experts warn that the potential loss of a large section of the wetland poses a serious threat to the survival of the ecosystem.

Environmental Groups Raise Alarm

Just days ago, the Ecological Initiative of Chania issued a statement blaming the Municipality, the Region, and the Government for neglecting their responsibility to protect the lake.

“In the face of this situation at Lake Agia, the Municipality, the Region, and the Government are looking the other way — despite their obligations under Greek and European law to safeguard Lake Agia, as well as all Natura 2000 areas,” the group stressed.

Lake Agia’s ecological importance is undeniable: as part of the Natura 2000 network, it shelters over 200 bird species and serves as a vital stopover for migratory birds, while also attracting nature lovers and tourists from around the world.
