Ukrainian hit on Russian substation – Oil flow to Hungary interrupted

Prior to today's disruption, the flow was temporarily interrupted last week after the Ukrainian military announced on 13 August that Ukrainian drones had hit the Uniecha refinery station

Newsroom August 18 02:22

The flow of Russian oil to Hungary has been interrupted following the Ukrainian attack on a transformation station of the Druzhba oil pipeline, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szizarto announced.

Hungary imports most of its oil through the Druzhba pipeline, which carries Russian oil through Belarus and Ukraine to Hungary and Slovakia.

Sizarto wrote on Facebook that he spoke with Russian Deputy Energy Minister Pavel Sorokin who told him it was unclear when the flow of oil would be restored.

Unlike other European Union countries, Hungary has maintained close political and business ties with Russia, as well as its energy dependence on Moscow since the Russian invasion of February 2022.

Last year, Sizarto said the Druzhba pipeline would remain the main oil import channel for his country.

Prior to today’s shutdown, the flow was temporarily halted last week after the Ukrainian military announced on August 13 that Ukrainian drones had struck the Uniecha refining station in Russia’s Bryansk region.
