At the Holy Metropolitan Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary in Alexandria, Imathia, the funeral service was held for Apostolos Vesyropoulos, secretary of the ND Parliamentary Group, who died suddenly on Thursday, August 21, at the age of 59 from cardiac arrest while vacationing with his family in Sithonia, Halkidiki.

His family, friends, and colleagues bid him their final farewell. The Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was present, as well as members of the government, ND MPs, representatives of Imathia’s local government, and local organizations.

Who Was Apostolos Vesyropoulos

Apostolos Vesyropoulos was a graduate of public higher education institutions, with a background in economics. He served in positions of responsibility, including Deputy Minister of Finance, responsible for Tax Policy and Public Property. Earlier, he had served in local government as a prefectural councilor and deputy prefect of Imathia, overseeing the departments of Agricultural Development, Finance, Commerce, and Consumer Protection. From 2004 to 2008, he worked as a tax officer in Veria. He was also a member of the board of the tax officers’ union (DAKE) of Imathia-Pella-Pieria. Since 2010, he had been vice president of the ND Prefectural Committee (NODE) of Imathia.

Apostolos Vesyropoulos was first elected MP for Imathia with ND in the 2012 elections. He was re-elected in both 2015 elections. In the 2019 and 2023 elections, he was the top vote-getting MP in Imathia. In 2019, in Mitsotakis’ government, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Finance, responsible for Tax Policy and Public Property. Following the latest government reshuffle, he became secretary of ND’s Parliamentary Group.

He is survived by his wife and two children.

The Family’s Wish

The family expressed their wish instead of wreaths, stating:

“Instead of wreaths, those who wish may support social organizations and charitable institutions in memory of Apostolos Vesyropoulos, who so unexpectedly left us. This is what our beloved Apostolos would have wanted, as throughout his life he stood by those in need and those who required help.”

Apostolos Vesyropoulos died on August 21 in Halkidiki. He suffered cardiac arrest while at Kalogria Beach in Sithonia.

Rescuers tried for an hour to bring him back to life, but without success. In a statement, the Ministry of Health noted that the National Emergency Center (EKAV) reached Kalogria in Halkidiki quickly despite the difficult terrain (in 21 minutes from the time they were alerted) and emphasized that despite the efforts made for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), there was no response.

It is worth noting that CPR efforts had already begun before the ambulance arrived, by an off-duty EKAV paramedic who happened to be in the area and a doctor.
