Weather: Storms, hail, and lightning today – Which areas will be affected

“First storms and then 40°C,” says Tsatrafyllias – “Caution with lightning in northern Greece,” warns Marousakis – What Kolydas and Giannopoulos forecast

Meteorologists are expecting severe weather phenomena today, with thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and hail, mainly in northwestern Greece.

According to ERT meteorologist Panagiotis Giannopoulos, a temporary deterioration of the weather is expected from the afternoon in northwestern regions with rain and local thunderstorms, especially in the northern Ionian and Epirus. The phenomena will continue until Sunday morning. By midday Sunday, a few showers are expected in eastern Macedonia and Thrace. From Monday, the weather will again be fair, with temperatures in mainland areas reaching 34–36°C, peaking on Tuesday and Wednesday, when Athens may see 35–36°C locally.

Kolydas: A few showers in the west and north

Meteorologist Thodoris Kolydas noted in a post that only a few showers are expected in the west and north, winds will remain weak, and temperatures will rise at the beginning of September.

“Winds will be weak in the coming days, with no area exceeding 5–6 Beaufort. A few showers are expected over the weekend in the west and north, while elsewhere the weather will be mostly fair. Temperatures will rise at the start of the month, running 4–6°C above normal. We are not talking about extreme heat, as we noted a few days ago.”

Tsatrafyllias: First storms, then 40°C

Meteorologist Giorgos Tsatrafyllias urged caution for today’s severe phenomena, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and hail.

In a Facebook post, he explained that storms, hail, and intense lightning activity are expected on Saturday in specific regions. However, the pattern will quickly shift, and by Tuesday 2 and Wednesday 3 September, temperatures could climb to around 40°C.

“Great caution is needed on Saturday for thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening in the northern Ionian and Epirus, as they may be accompanied by hail and intense lightning activity. The heat in the first week of September also seems certain, with temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday, 2–3/9/25, approaching 40°C in heat-prone areas of eastern and northern Greece,” he wrote.

Marousakis: Caution with lightning in northern Greece

Meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis (Open TV) warned of a dangerous weekend with severe storms. The mini-wave of bad weather will mainly affect northwestern Greece, while in other regions temperatures could reach 37°C.

“Rain and thunderstorms from Saturday afternoon initially in the northwest, spreading on Sunday to many parts of western, central, and northern Greece. These phenomena—especially in the west, north, and northwest—will be locally strong and dangerous, very likely accompanied by hail and frequent lightning,” he forecast.

He emphasized:

“Caution with lightning in northern Greece over the weekend, from Lamia northwards, as it could cause many problems.”

Today’s weather

  • Across the country, some clouds will gradually increase from the west.
  • From midday, rain and scattered thunderstorms will develop, mainly in the northern Ionian, Epirus, and western Macedonia. These phenomena will be intense, with hail in places. Overnight, they will extend (with less intensity) into the central Ionian and western Sterea.
  • Localized showers or storms may also affect central Sterea, Thessaly, and the rest of Macedonia.

Athens: Partly cloudy, especially in the afternoon. Winds from the south up to 4 Beaufort, shifting to west up to 5 Beaufort at night. Temperatures 23–32/33°C.

Thessaloniki: Partly cloudy, increasing in the afternoon, with possible rain at night. Winds variable 2–4 Beaufort. Temperatures 22–32/33°C.
