Hellenic Armed Forces on alert due to the Piri Reis – Readiness Exercise from Evros to Kastellorizo

An exercise was ordered early this morning, with the activation of a joint rapid reaction force, and will last throughout the day – See the announcement by the Hellenic National Defence General Staff (HNDGS)

Newsroom September 17 09:47

A readiness exercise spanning from Evros to Kastellorizo was ordered in the early hours of today, with the activation of a joint rapid reaction force, which will continue for the entire day.

The aim is to test the readiness of the Hellenic Armed Forces, though military sources do not overlook the fact that this also constitutes a “signal of deterrence and a show of strength,” given that all three branches of the Armed Forces, as well as special forces, will participate across the country.

It should be noted that the Greek side, as protothema.gr reported, responded instantly to the Turkish NAVTEX concerning research by the oceanographic vessel Piri Reis, by issuing a counter-NAVTEX, while the Government Council for National Security is also set to convene within minutes.

Announcement by the HNDGS on the Conduct of the Readiness Exercise

In the early morning hours of Wednesday, September 17, 2025, and by order of the Chief of the HNDGS, General Dimitrios Choupis, a surprise joint readiness exercise was ordered.

The purpose of the exercise is to enhance operational readiness by testing the implementation procedures of special plans, within the framework of the HNDGS’s operational planning.

The exercise is conducted within the area of responsibility of the Chief of the HNDGS and covers parts of both sea and land areas, including regions in Evros and the Aegean.

For the implementation of this activity, the joint readiness force was activated, with participating personnel and assets from all three (3) branches of the Armed Forces, as well as from the HNDGS Special Warfare Command.
