Weather: A new wave of bad weather begins from the west with heavy rain, lasting until Monday

Meteorologists warn of the need for special caution over the next few hours in Corfu, Paxos, and Epirus. Yesterday, the thermometer at Ochyro Nevrokopi showed just 2.2°C

Newsroom October 17 09:11

Rainy weather is expected across many parts of Greece in the coming days, with Attica likely to experience the heaviest rainfall on Monday.

According to meteorologist Thodoris Kolydas, particular caution is needed in the northwest (Corfu, Paxos, Epirus) over the next few hours, and through tomorrow morning in the Ionian Islands and the rest of western Greece. By Sunday afternoon, a new low-pressure system from the Gulf of Sirte will bring weather disturbances to the eastern parts of the country.

Regarding Attica, Kolydas—meteorologist for Star TV and former head of the National Meteorological Service (EMY)—notes that although ECMWF models do not indicate extreme rainfall intensity, caution is still advised.

Meteorologist Giorgos Tsatrafilias reports in a post that the western regions will receive a large amount of rain in the next 24 hours. Between Friday morning (Oct 17) and afternoon, attention is needed in Corfu, Paxos, Lefkada, Kefalonia, Thesprotia, and Preveza, where up to 80 tons of water per stremma (0.1 hectare) may fall. Local storms are also possible, with southerly gusts up to 80 km/h.

For the next atmospheric disturbance (Sunday night to Monday night), Tsatrafilias estimates that it will mostly affect western Greece and the eastern island regions. He warns of heavy rainfall over a short period in Thessaly, Sporades, Euboea, Boeotia, and Attica.

Meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis notes that the weather will “align with the season,” with rain and thunderstorms starting in western Greece and gradually spreading across most of the country on Sunday and Monday.

Weather forecast by Klearchos Marousakis:

  1. Friday: The heaviest rains will affect western Greece, with locally strong southerly winds.
  2. Saturday: A “Π-type” weather pattern will prevail, meaning light to moderate rain in western, northern, and eastern Aegean islands.
  3. Sunday: Widespread deterioration, starting from the west, bringing locally heavy rain and thunderstorms that will continue into Monday.
  4. Saturday temperatures: Unseasonably high in central, eastern, and southern Greece (26–28°C).
  5. Attica: Significant rainfall expected on Monday.
