Whitcoff and Kushner arrived in Israel – The US tries to prevent breaks in the ceasefire

Yesterday's killing of two Israeli soldiers by Hamas fire threatens the already fragile ceasefire in the Gaza Strip

Newsroom October 20 04:02

Trump’s special envoy Steve Whitcoff and top White House adviser Jared Kushner arrived in Israel on Monday, according to Jewish media reports.

Their visit is part of a concerted US effort to prevent further deterioration of the fragile ceasefire in Gaza, a day after two IDF soldiers were killed in a Hamas attack and Israel responded with airstrikes across the Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile, Israel has warned Hamas members who have taken refuge on the eastern side of the Yellow Line – 53% of the Gaza Strip under Israeli control as part of the ceasefire – to evacuate the area immediately or they will be targeted.

Defense Minister Israel Katz said he instructed the Israeli army to convey this warning to Hamas through the US-led international monitoring mechanism, which oversees the Gaza ceasefire.

“All Hamas fighters who are beyond the Yellow Line, in territory under Israeli control, must withdraw immediately. Hamas leaders will bear responsibility for any incident,” Katz said in a statement.

“Anyone remaining in the area will be targeted without further warning, so that IDF forces can act freely and directly against any threat,” he added.
