New success of the Transplant Surgery Clinic of the Aristotle University

Newsroom October 30 11:24

The first liver transplant by a female surgeon in Greece took place on 17 October 2025, at the Transplantation Surgery Clinic of Aristotelian University.

In a field where the participation of women has been historically limited, the young but experienced surgeon Ms. Constantina Eleni Karakasi successfully performed the first liver transplant by a female surgeon in Greece.

The successful operation on a 59-year-old patient, which was performed under the guidance of the Director of the Clinic, Professor of the Department of Medicine Mr. Georgios Tsoulfas, is an important milestone for Greek medicine and confirms the high scientific training of the female medical staff, as well as the emphasis that Aristotle University of Thessaloniki places on the effective training of young scientists.

Born and raised in Istanbul, Ms Karakasi graduated with honors from Zographio and studied medicine at Aristotle University, where she completed her residency. Today, she works as a General Surgeon at the Transplant Clinic of Aristotle University, with experience in liver and kidney transplantation. At the same time, she is a PhD Candidate at the Aristotle University, studying the application of new technologies, such as 3D imaging (LIDAR), in surgery.
