Significant developments in Vorizia case: Video shows Fanouris Kargakis’ son-in-law opening fire

In the next few hours an arrest warrant is expected to be issued against the 43-year-old son-in-law of Kargakis, for the manslaughter of Evangelia Fragiadakis

Newsroom November 5 07:11

New evidence has emerged in the investigation of last Saturday’s deadly shooting in Vorizia. Police have obtained video footage showing the 43-year-old son-in-law of Fanouris Kargakis—one of the victims—firing towards the location where the gunfight occurred.

The 43-year-old was arrested today (11/5) following his identification in connection with the violent altercation and the discovery of weapons in a cave on property registered to him. The video was recently handed over to the Greek FBI, prompting the Greek National Police to launch a focused investigation aimed at locating the Kalashnikov rifle responsible for the fatal injury of 56-year-old Evaggelia Fragiadakis.

Reports indicate that an arrest warrant will soon be issued for Kargakis’ 43-year-old brother-in-law in relation to the manslaughter of Fragiadaki.

Official Statement from the Hellenic Police Regarding the Arrest

The Hellenic Police stated:

“Following earlier announcements, the Heraklion Sub-Division for the Investigation and Detection of Crimes has identified a 43-year-old local man as involved in the armed incident in a Heraklion settlement, which resulted in the deaths of two individuals.

The suspect was arrested today, and weapons, ammunition, and other items were seized from an open area on his property.

A case has been filed against him as part of the ongoing investigation. He will be presented before the competent judicial authorities, and the preliminary investigation files regarding his role in the incident have been forwarded for further inquiry.

Further updates will follow as the investigation progresses.”

Details on the Weapons and Fatalities

At least three types of firearms were reportedly used in the deadly confrontation that claimed the lives of 39-year-old Fanouris Kargakis and 56-year-old Evaggelia Fragiadakis. Initial reports suggest the use of 9mm pistols, a Kalashnikov rifle, and a shotgun. Ballistic analysis is underway to determine the exact number and type of weapons involved.

Preliminary findings indicate that Fragiadakis sustained a through-and-through wound with a long trajectory, consistent with injuries caused by a Kalashnikov.

Background on the Arrests and Surrender

The three brothers implicated in the incident voluntarily surrendered yesterday afternoon. Initially reluctant due to concerns over potential tension during the operation, their surrender was coordinated discreetly with the director of the DOCE. The defendants were transported by three vans, accompanied by their legal counsel, and entered the Heraklion Police Headquarters at 6:20 p.m. on Tuesday.

Legally, this is classified as a voluntary surrender, a factor that may positively influence the judicial proceedings.

Following the initial brawl, the three men reportedly sought refuge in the mountains and later stayed at the residences of acquaintances within the area.
