Smart meters across Greece: How the new technology will change electricity consumption

Nova takes on the project to connect 1 million smart meters for HEDNO, introducing NB-IoT and LTE-M technologies that bring energy management into the IoT and green development era

Newsroom November 6 04:13

The new era of energy in Greece begins with a landmark agreement: Nova has been awarded, following a HEDNO tender, the task of connecting 1,000,000 smart electricity meters. This is the largest project of its kind in the country, paving the way for the full digital transformation of energy infrastructure.

The project is part of HEDNO’s ambitious plan to replace all conventional meters with smart devices—a total of 7.7 million meters nationwide—creating an energy network capable of self-monitoring, detecting faults in real time, and contributing to green development.

The Technology Behind “Smart” Energy

The new NB-IoT (Narrowband Internet of Things) and LTE-M (Long Term Evolution for Machines) technologies allow continuous collection and transmission of consumption data safely and accurately.

Each smart meter will send 96 measurements per day—one every 15 minutes—providing consumers with a complete view of their usage and enabling HEDNO to detect electricity theft or outages without delay.

Nova provides specialized MFF2 eUICC SIM cards and an IoT Management Portal through which technicians can monitor meters in real time, receive alerts, and perform over-the-air upgrades without on-site teams.

A Secure, Scalable, and Green Network

Nova’s NB-IoT/LTE-M network offers dual coverage, even in underground installations, while data transmission is encrypted and highly available. The system is designed to be expandable for future 5G technologies and to support a wide range of Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

“With this project, Nova sets new standards in smart metering, accelerating digital transformation and sustainable development,” said Dimitris Magkos, Executive Director B2B at the company. “We are creating a complete ecosystem of services that delivers operational and environmental benefits for all.”

HEDNO in the New Era of the “Smart” Grid

HEDNO CEO Tasos Manos emphasized that the installation of smart meters marks a historic leap for the country’s energy network:

“With the digitization of lines and substations, HEDNO’s network becomes the largest connected device system in Greece. Through our collaboration with Nova, we ensure that meters communicate securely and reliably, offering faster service and smarter solutions to citizens.”

This new infrastructure allows for more accurate billing, energy savings, and a green transition, positioning Greece as a regional leader in smart energy networks.
