New €12.2 million package of payments from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development – Compensations to farmers and Regions

Tsiaras: We continue to support farmers affected by smallpox

Newsroom November 13 01:06

The fourth distribution of compensation to farmers affected by the smallpox epizootic disease, amounting to 12,248,642.97 euros, was approved by a decision of the Minister of Rural Development and Food, Kostas Tsiaras.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, for the operational costs of the regions and compensation for farmers, 48,080,149.29 euros have been paid so far, covering all the affected areas of the country.

“We consistently continue to support the farmers affected by smallpox and the Regions that have borne the burden of dealing with the crisis. The smooth flow of payments and the strengthening of veterinary services demonstrate our commitment to actively support Greek livestock farming,” Mr. Tsiaras said in a statement, adding, “the protection of livestock is the responsibility of all of us and requires strict adherence to biosecurity measures. The cooperation of the state, regions, and producers is the only way to ensure the future of Greek livestock production”.

The largest payments have been directed to Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (€17,656,738.31) and Thessaly (€16,463,708.27), followed by Western Greece (€4,573,114.34), Central Macedonia (€4,150,980.29) and Central Greece (€2,104,458.36).

The 4th distribution of 2025, compensation again strengthens Thessaly, which receives the largest part, amounting to 6,962,120.96 euros, while Eastern Macedonia and Thrace receive 3,438,114.12 euros.

Significant funding is also directed to Western Greece (€1,017,027.98), Central Macedonia (€416,719.79), and Sterea Greece (€413,405.72). Finally, it should be noted that the compensation per animal killed reaches up to 250 euros, the highest in the European Union.
