New complaint about editing of Trump’s speech in another broadcast is being investigated by the BBC

The Telegraph writes that Newsnight selectively edited Trump's speech in June 2022, two years before Panorama

Newsroom November 14 10:19

The BBC has said it is looking into new allegations, published in The Telegraph, about the editing of US President Donald Trump‘s speech from another of its broadcasts.

Britain’s public broadcaster has been plunged into its biggest crisis in decades after two senior executives resigned amid allegations of bias and the way a speech by Trump was edited from Panorama. The US president threatened to file a lawsuit seeking $1 billion in damages.

The Telegraph, which first broke the story, writes today that another BBC show, Newsnight, also selectively edited Trump’s same speech in June 2022, two years before Panorama. That montage was similar to the one on Panorama.

“The BBC adheres to the highest journalistic standards,” a spokesman said in response to the Telegraph report. “This matter has been brought to our attention and we are looking into it,” he added.

On Monday, the BBC apologised for Panorama, which had combined together three parts of Trump’s speech on 6 January 2021, when the Republican president’s supporters stormed the Capitol. The edited speech gave the impression that Trump incited violence.

Trump’s lawyers have said the BBC must withdraw this documentary by tomorrow Friday or they will file a lawsuit worth “at least” $1 billion. They also want the BBC to apologize and compensate Trump for damaging his reputation and causing him “financial loss.”
