Greece among the countries that Trump thanks for the approval of the new UN Peace Council

No details have been given about the composition or responsibilities of the new body, which will be chaired by Trump himself

Newsroom November 18 11:03

Greece is among the countries that US President Donald Trump has thanked for the UN Security Council’s approval of the creation of the Board of Peace, a new international body that he said will be chaired by the US president. The announcement was made via a post on Truth Social.

Trump called it a “historic decision” and thanked by name the permanent and non-permanent members of the Security Council, including Greece. He also thanked countries outside the Security Council, including Qatar, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Turkey and Jordan.

No details have been given on the composition or responsibilities of the new body. President Trump has indicated that announcements will follow in the coming weeks.

Thirteen members voted for the text, two abstained

The UN Security Council yesterday Monday voted in favour of the US president’s plan, which among other things notably calls for the deployment of an international armed force under pressure from Washington, which has warned against the risk of a resumption of war in the Gaza Strip.

Thirteen UN member states voted in favour of the text, which US Ambassador to the UN Mike Walch called “historic and constructive”. Russia and China abstained.

The US text, which was repeatedly amended in subtle negotiations, “embraces” Trump’s plan, which allowed a fragile ceasefire to go into effect on October 10 in the Palestinian enclave where Israel and Hamas’ war has raged for more than two years, triggered by the Palestinian Islamist movement’s assault on the southern part of Israeli territory on October 7, 2023.
