When climate change knocks at our door

Climate change is no longer a distant and abstract concept. It is a global phenomenon that touches the everyday life of every household - from the cost of energy, to the safety of the home and the health of family members

Newsroom December 1 02:38

This is not just an environmental crisis, but is accompanied by significant impacts with real economic and social repercussions for millions of people due to natural disasters.

In Greece, for example, in recent years, extreme weather events such as floods, fires, and heat waves have affected many areas. In Thessaly, the floods of 2023 left thousands of homes and household goods, while many families found themselves starting from scratch. Similarly, in the fire-affected areas of Rhodes and Evia, households face not only the cost of restoration, but also the uncertainty of whether something similar will happen again.

The Visible Impact

Climate change is also putting a strain on the cost of living. Increasingly frequent heat waves are increasing energy consumption for cooling, leading to higher electricity bills, while extreme events are affecting food prices. Bad weather can destroy crops, raising the cost of basic foodstuffs, which we have recently seen, for example, with olive oil. Thus, the ‘bad climate’ becomes a factor of precision for everyone’s daily life.

The climate crisis, however, is not only hitting the wallet, but also the psychology. Studies show that people living in areas where extreme weather events are common experience increased levels of anxiety and insecurity. Losing a home or property to floods or fires is a traumatic experience, especially for children and the elderly. These effects can last for years, even after homes have been rebuilt.

The moves that “shield” tomorrow
In the face of this new reality with its enormous implications, the response cannot be limited to state intervention alone, but also requires our own individual activism. Private insurance now has the solutions to deal with the consequences of climate change and bring peace of mind to households. It must act proactively and protectively in the event of such phenomena.

National Insurance offers rich solutions for home insurance. The Full Home Advance and Full Home Max plans, with the addition of earthquake coverage, offer comprehensive protection against natural disasters.

Let’s not forget also that from June 2025, according to the new legislation (Law 5162/2024), insurance of vehicles against natural disasters is mandatory. This means that all vehicle owners, whether private or commercial, are required to have an insurance policy that includes coverage for damage caused by natural phenomena, such as forest fires and floods.

At the same time, under the new law (Law 5116/2024), insurance for businesses with a turnover of more than €500,000 against natural disasters (forest fire, flood, earthquake) is mandatory, for at least 70% of the value of their assets. National Insurance stands firmly by the side of businesses by offering solutions according to their needs, which enhance their growth, sustainability, and resilience.
