A meeting chaired by Kyriakos Mitsotakis on the issue of payments to farmers and their progress is being held on Wednesday morning at the Maximou Mansion.
Participating in the meeting under the Prime Minister are Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis, Rural Development Minister Kostas Tsiaras, the head of the AADE, Giorgos Pitsilis, and the interim head of OPEKEPE, Yannis Kavvadas
As reported earlier by protothema.gr, the government is seeking to reach out to the farmers in an effort to ease the crisis, shaping the framework and conditions for dialogue.
Specifically, according to sources, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has instructed his team to make it clear to the farmers that the doors are open for discussion—but only within a defined framework.
As government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis stated on Wednesday morning during an interview on Action 24, the farmers need “to appoint a specific representative committee, and shortly after—at most the following day—a high-level meeting will be held.”
The reasonable questions that arise are who will represent the farmers and who will participate from the government side. According to protothema.gr’s information, the composition is interdependent: the broader and more representative the farmers’ delegation, the higher the level of government officials involved in the dialogue.
At a minimum, it is understood, Kostis Hatzidakis and the Minister of Rural Development, Kostas Tsiaras, will participate. However, if the government deems that the farmers select an appropriate representative body, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will also join the discussions.
