Poland: Vehicles formed kilometer-long queues on a highway due to heavy snowfall

Hundreds of people were trapped in their cars in very low temperatures until the early hours of Wednesday

Newsroom December 31 04:38

Heavy snowfall in Poland caused massive traffic jams overnight, stretching up to 20 kilometers along a highway between the capital Warsaw and the Baltic city of Gdańsk, police said today.

Although hundreds of people were stranded in their vehicles in very low temperatures until the early morning hours, traffic has now started moving again, according to the police.

“The difficult situation began yesterday after 4 p.m., when the first trucks on the S7 highway started having trouble climbing uphill sections,” said Tomasz Markowski, a police spokesperson in the northern city of Olsztyn. “This led to traffic chaos stretching about 20 kilometers during the night.”

Deputy Infrastructure Minister Stanisław Bukowiec said at a press conference that there were no injuries.

The state news agency PAP reported that there were also some problems on the rail network and at airports, but operations have since been restored.
