Weather: Spring in winter with temperatures up to 22 degrees at the weekend

The shift of the air tide limits the rains and weakens the winds in the coming days - At 22-24 degrees yesterday the maximum temperatures

Newsroom February 7 10:00

Mild temperatures, increased humidity, and recurring episodes of light rainfall make up the weather of the next few days, according to meteorologists Thodoris Kolydas and George Tsatrafillias, with the weekend looking more like spring than the heart of winter.

As Thodoris Kolydas points out, the weather over the next few days will move into generally mild temperature ranges, with mercury remaining just above normal for the season. The atmosphere will remain fairly humid, with most precipitation occurring in the western parts of the country and the eastern Aegean.

Local rains will not be absent from Attica next week, but they will be generally light and transient, without causing any particular problems. In the west and in the island areas of the eastern Aegean, the phenomena may occur more frequently.

He described the overall picture as a pattern of small variations and repeated weak rainfall, referring symbolically to the “Groundhog weather”, where the same conditions seem to repeat almost daily.

Up to 19 degrees in Athens and spring conditions

Particularly pleasant temperatures are expected next weekend, especially in Athens, where the mercury will reach 19 degrees Celsius locally, creating a sense of early spring. Despite the generally mild nature of the weather, Thodoris Kolydas stresses that caution is required in areas where soils remain saturated from previous rains, as even prolonged weak phenomena may increase the risk of local flooding, especially in the west and eastern Aegean.

The subtropical airmass brings warmer air masses

For his part, Giorgos Tsatrafillas explains that the subtropical airmass has shifted further north, favouring the transport of warmer air masses from North Africa to our country. This phenomenon is limiting weekend rainfall and weakening winds.

With the help of the downslope winds, temperatures are expected to be 6 to 8 degrees above normal for the season. Typically, maximum values of 20 to 22 degrees Celsius are expected on Saturday and Sunday in areas such as Crete, Attica, Thessaly, eastern Peloponnese, Boeotia, Evia and Fthiotida.

The general conclusion of the meteorologists is that the weather will remain mild and recurring, with minor fluctuations, maintaining a spring “break” into winter.

At 22-24 degrees maximum temperatures on Friday

High maximum temperatures were recorded in the country on Friday, 06/02, with maximum temperatures reaching 22-24°C. According to the network of automatic weather stations of the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr, the highest maximum temperature was recorded in the centre of Chania at 24.1 °C.

The map in the image below shows the distribution of the country’s maximum temperatures and the 8 stations with the highest maximum temperatures.

Today’s weather

Most parts of the country are expected to have improved weather with some localised clouds. Clouds will be thicker in the west, where a few local showers are very likely. In the evening, showers and thunderstorms will occur in the Ionian Islands, western Sterea, and Epirus. During the night towards Sunday, the phenomena will extend to parts of the Peloponnese and Central Greece, while showers or thunderstorms will occur on the East Aegean islands and the Northern Dodecanese. In the morning hours, visibility will be locally limited. African dust concentrations will remain elevated in Crete and the Dodecanese.

The temperature will range in Western Macedonia from -2 to 12-14 degrees Celsius, in the rest of Macedonia and Thrace from 2 to 16-18 degrees, in Epirus from 6 to 17-18 degrees, in the central continent from 4 to 19-20 degrees, in the rest of the continent from 8 to 17-20 degrees, in the Ionian Islands from 11 to 17-19 degrees, in the Aegean Islands from 11 to 18-19 degrees, in Crete from 12 to 24-26 degrees Celsius.

The winds in the Aegean, Ionian, and mainland will blow from the west at 4-5 Beaufort and from the afternoon locally strong 6 Beaufort.

In the prefecture of Attica and the city of Athens, a few clouds are expected. In the morning hours, the visibility will be locally limited. The winds will be westerly and blow at 3-4 Beaufort. The temperature will range from 9 to 18 degrees Celsius.

A few clouds are expected in Thessaloniki. In the morning hours, the visibility will be locally limited. Winds will be light and blow from variable directions. The temperature will range from 7 to 16-17 degrees Celsius.
