The battle of threes

Newsroom September 20 08:03

Right-wing populist Independent Greeks (ANEL), Popular Unity Party (Laiki Enotita) and Union of Centrists are seeking a place in Greek Parliament. Exit polls at 7 p.m. showed all three parties having a chance to gather 3% of the votes with the following estimations:

ANEL – 3-4% estimations

Headed by former defense minister Panos Kammenos, the right-wing, anti-austerity party was a junior coalition member of the SYRIZA government before elections. In the January, 2015, elections ANEL was the sixth party with 4.75% of the votes and 13 seats.

Popular Unity – 2.7-3.7%

Panagiotis Lafazanis, who headed SYRIZA’s  Left Platform, branched off from the Radical Left Coalition after the third bailout deal was signed by former PM Alexis Tsipras. It was founded on August 21, 2015, by 25 parliamentarians. The party favors Greek withdrawal from the eurozone and reinstating the drachma as Greece’s national currency.
