YouTube will begin to Flag news from State-funded broadcasters & “Conspiracy Theorists”!

The BBC isn’t going to like that...

Newsroom February 7 12:27

In YouTube’s official blog, the platform states,

A big goal for us in 2018 is to provide greater transparency across the board to our communities of creators, advertisers, and viewers. In one small step towards that commitment, today we will start rolling out notices below videos uploaded by news broadcasters that receive some level of government or public funding. Our goal is to equip users with additional information to help them better understand the sources of news content that they choose to watch on YouTube.

The change will see notices appearing above news broadcasters’ video titles, and will include a link to Wikipedia. For example, RT (Russia Today) will now have a label that says. “RT is funded in whole or in part by the Russian government.”

YouTube are also considering addressing conspiracy theory videos by showing videos from ‘credible’ news sources next to conspiracy theorist content. Neal Mohan, chief product officer of YouTube, told the Wall Street Journal, “The principle here is to provide more information to our users, and let our users make the judgment themselves, as opposed to us being in the business of providing any sort of editorial judgment on any of these things ourselves.”

YouTube is also working with the Google News division to create a list news source it deems reliable. Many have suspected such changes would be intended to target news and commentary providers like InfoWars, who are incessantly labeled by mainstream media as toting conspiracy theories.
