Greek Bishop invited faithful to book limited seats for Christmas Liturgy amid Covid-19 pandemic

The Metropolitan of Ioannina wants to avoid overcrowding during the Christmas holidays

Newsroom December 22 03:45

A Greek Bishop has implemented a novel way to comply with the Covid-19 rules in the churches under his jurisdiction and keep tabs on the number of those in attendance, as he has invited laity to book their spots for Holy Liturgy in light of the Christmas holidays.

Metropolitan of Ioannina Maximos in view of Christmas invited the faithful to go to the churches after first contacting their local priests by phone – “People respond positively to the movement of our Metropolitan”, say the priests of the temples.

Christians in Ioannina have already started responding positively to the circular of Metropolitan Maximos, as a result of which they are constantly calling the holy temples, in order to make a reservation and to be sure that they will attend the great service of the Christmas celebration.

As reported in protothema.gr, the priests of the churches who have been talking to the flock, people from the same family can call and register the name and number of believers who will attend the Liturgy while the others are requested to call and book separately.

“It’s not something new for the faithful because it has been like this for almost the whole year. And so were the Epiphanies at Easter and all the great ecclesiastical feasts. Here the Metropolitan Church can accommodate 370 people in compliance with the Covid measures. We have already started and we are accepting the first phone calls. People from the same family call once and just mention the name and number of people, the others individually. A total of 1480 people will have to attend the four Christmas Masses, however, we expect a much smaller number “.
